Hair Transplant Surgery

What Is Hair Transplant?

A hair transplant is a surgical procedure to address hair loss or baldness. This involves relocating hair follicles from one area of the body with healthy hair (donor site) to bald or thinning areas on the scalp (recipient site). The transplanted hair follicles are typically taken from the patient’s own hair, which ensures a natural-looking appearance and long-lasting results.

Who Are Suitable Candidates for Hair Transplant?

Hair transplants are an effective treatment option for individuals facing significant hair loss due to genetics, hormonal fluctuations, or scalp scarring. Typically, this procedure is recommended for individuals over the age of 25 and in good overall health.

However, ideal candidates for this procedure should have sufficient healthy hair on the scalp, high hair follicle density, and stabilized hair loss patterns.

How Does Hair Transplant Surgery Work?

The hair transplant surgeon will first thoroughly clean your scalp and apply local anesthesia to numb the specific area of the head. Then, they will take small pieces of skin (grafts) from areas of the body that contain healthy hair, typically the back or sides of the scalp. The surgeon will carefully attach the grafts to the hairless areas of the scalp. Once the transplanted skin heals, the hair will continue to grow.

What Conditions Can Hair Transplants Treat?

Hair transplants are usually performed to treat hair loss due to:

  • Male and Female Pattern Baldness – Also known as androgenetic alopecia, pattern baldness is the most common type of hair loss. This is a genetic condition that causes gradual thinning and receding of the hairline, often resulting in a recognizable pattern of baldness.
  • Congenital Triangular AlopeciaThis is a rare condition characterized by a small, triangular or lancet-shaped area of permanent hair loss. It is typically found on the frontotemporal scalp, the area covering the hairline and the hair around the temples.
  • Traction AlopeciaThis is a type of hair loss that occurs due to prolonged or repetitive pulling of the hair, usually from certain hairstyles, such as tight braids, ponytails, or extensions.

Hair Transplant Procedure

Our hair transplant clinic uses two methods for the transplantation process, including:

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

FUT, also called strip harvesting, involves extracting a strip of scalp from the back of the head. From this strip, individual grafts are taken and implanted into balding areas. FUT is often used to treat severe cases of hair loss.

FUT Procedure

Hair transplantation using the FUT technique involves several steps, such as:

  • Administering Local AnesthesiaBefore starting the procedure, the surgeon will trim the donor area to prepare for the hair follicle extraction process. Then, local anesthesia will be used to numb the donor area, ensuring a pain-free experience. In some cases, a mild sedative may be used to further relax the patient.
  • Harvesting and Closing the Donor Site – Once the anesthesia has taken effect, a strip of tissue is surgically removed from the donor site, typically at the back or sides of the scalp, using a scalpel to harvest hair follicles. The donor site is then closed with either sutures or surgical staples for a more discreet linear scar.
  • Dissecting the Grafts – At this stage, the harvested strip of skin is carefully dissected under a stereo-microscope, a process known as strip slivering. The strip will be separated into smaller groups of individual hair follicles, which are known as hair grafts.
  • Creating Recipient Sites – The surgeon then creates small incisions in the balding or thinning areas of the scalp. Using specialized tools, these incisions will serve as entry points for hair grafts.
  • Implanting the Grafts – The final phase involves implanting the dissected hair grafts into the recipient incisions. Typically, the small one- to two-hair follicular units are carefully placed in the frontal area to create a soft and natural hairline, while the three- to four-hair grafts are positioned in the central forelock area to increase fullness.

Did You Know? 🧠

In hair transplant surgery, a thin strip of scalp containing healthy hair follicles, known as a hair graft, is extracted from a dense area at the back or sides of the head. This graft is meticulously dissected into smaller units, each containing one to several follicles. These individual follicular units are then transplanted into bald or thinning areas of the scalp.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

FUE is a less invasive type of hair transplant surgery that involves removing individual hair follicles from a donor site and placing them into the balding regions. Compared to other methods, this procedure offers faster recovery and virtually invisible scars.

FUE Procedure

Here is a step-by-step guide on what happens during FUE surgery:

  • Defining Donor and Recipient Zones – The surgeon will assess the patient’s facial anatomy, hair density, hair type, hair structure, and available donor hair to formulate a natural-looking hairline design that complements their facial features.
  • Administering Local Anesthesia – Then, the surgeon delicately trims or shaves hair from the donor site and applies local anesthesia to numb the scalp, making the procedure entirely pain-free.
  • Extracting Hair Grafts – Individual hair follicles are extracted from the donor area one at a time using a specialized punch device. This technique is performed with precision, as it carefully scores the skin around the follicles and separates them from surrounding tissue to excise them, leaving minimal scarring at the donor site.
  • Preparing the Recipient Areas – Once the follicles are extracted, the next step is to prepare the recipient area. Tiny incisions are created in the scalp where these extracted follicles will be implanted, following the hair transplant design made by the surgeon during the initial consultation.
  • Implanting the Grafts – Finally, the donor hair grafts are meticulously inserted into the recipient sites with the appropriate angle and depth to ensure a natural-looking hairline and optimal hair density.

Risks and Benefits of Hair Transplant Surgery

Hair transplants are generally a safe procedure, particularly when performed by a skilled and board-certified hair transplant surgeon. However, it is important to be aware of both the risks and benefits of the treatment, as individuals may experience different physical reactions and healing abilities.

Risks of Hair Transplant Surgery

  • Scarring
  • Infection
  • Adverse reaction to anesthesia
  • Failed grafts or flaps
  • Excessive blood loss (hemorrhage)
  • Numbness or loss of sensation around the surgical area
Benefits of Hair Transplant Surgery

  • Restore hair appearance
  • Natural-looking result
  • Increased self-esteem
  • Permanent hair loss solution
  • Cost-effective
  • Low maintenance

What to Expect After Hair Transplant Surgery

While the results of hair transplant surgery are often long-lasting and natural-looking, it is common for some patients to experience some side effects immediately after the procedure. These side effects are normal and should subside eventually.

Short-term side effects of hair transplants include:

  • Formation of crusts
  • Bleeding
  • Swelling
  • Scalp pain and throbbing
  • Sudden hair loss
  • Inflammation of hair follicles (folliculitis)

Recovery

The recovery process following a hair transplant surgery may vary depending on the specific technique used, FUE or FUT. Patients can expect the following:

  • FUE Recovery: As a minimally invasive technique, recovery after FUE is generally quicker, with patients often able to return to work and normal activities within five or seven days. The small, circular scars at the extraction sites tend to heal quickly, and the risk of visible scarring is lower than FUT.
  • FUT Recovery: The FUT procedure, which involves the removal of a strip of skin from the donor area, typically requires a longer recovery time. Patients may need to take between seven and 14 days off work to allow the linear scar to heal. The recovery process may also involve more discomfort and swelling during the initial stages.

Regardless of the technique used, patients must follow the postoperative instructions provided by their hair transplant surgeon to ensure a smooth and successful recovery.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How common is hair loss?

Hair loss is a common occurrence, affecting both men and women. It is estimated that up to 50% of women and 80% of men will experience noticeable hair loss at some point in their lives. Factors such as genetics, aging, hormonal changes, and certain medical conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) can contribute to hair loss.

Is hair transplant painful?

During a hair transplant, local anesthesia is used to numb the scalp, ensuring that the procedure is relatively painless. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or soreness after the surgery, but this can be managed with medication prescribed by the surgeon. Overall, the pain associated with a hair transplant is minimal.

What is the best hair transplant procedure?

The best hair transplant procedure depends on individual factors such as hair loss pattern, available donor hair, and the expertise of the surgeon. Techniques like follicular unit transplantation (FUT) and follicular unit extraction (FUE) are commonly performed, each with its own advantages and considerations. The choice of procedure should be discussed with a trusted hair transplant specialist based on personalized needs and goals.

Is hair transplant a permanent solution?

Hair transplantation is considered a permanent solution as the transplanted hair follicles are typically resistant to balding. However, it’s important to note that existing hair loss patterns may continue, and further hair loss in non-transplanted areas of the scalp may occur over time. Adhering to post-operative care instructions and maintaining overall scalp health can optimize long-term results.
